Drive Sober Or Get Pulled Over Campaign Kick-Off

MANSFIELD, OH– Local law enforcement personnel will be participating in the National Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign to deter motorists from getting behind the wheel while under the influence.

This event will be running from August 18th through September 4th.

August 21st, at 11:15 AM, Richland County Safe Communities will be hosting its Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over kickoff event at Central Park in front of the gazebo. (In case of rain, the event will be held in Red Cross meeting room). There will be a brief presentation on the importance of the risks you take if you choose to drive under the influence of alcohol/drugs. Guest speakers will give their experiences in dealing with the consequences of drunk driving. All are welcome and urged to attend.

According to Ohio Crash Facts, there were 12,243 total alcohol related crashes in Ohio in 2016. Of these 12,243 crashes, 5,076 were injury crashes and 346 resulted in death. Alcohol impaired drivers were involved in 3.91% of all crashes and 30.54% of all fatalities. In 2016 there were 14,827 OVI Enforcement stops, and so far, this year there have been 15,804 OVI enforcement stops.

Last year in Richland County there were 127 total alcohol related crashes where we saw 67 injury crashes and 1 fatality. There were 392 OVI arrests in Richland County in 2016 and so far, this year there have been 301 OVI arrests made.

“It’s important to remember that drunk driving crashes are no accident, they are 100% preventable”, said Lyndsie Martin, Safe Communities Coordinator. “It all connects back to human choices and errors, and with continuous education and help from our safety partners, we can work toward a world where there are no more deaths caused by a poor decision such as driving impaired.”
