The fourth annual Great Cardboard Boat Regatta was held Friday at Colonel Crawford High School.

The three-hour event is great fun, with an educational purpose.

Ninety students from Lucas, Crestline, and Colonel Crawford high schools designed and built single-seat boats using cardboard and duct tape, then put them in the pool and raced them.

Crestline High School Manufacturing Teacher Keith Strickler says each boat was raced by each of the three-member team that built, and they were timed.

It took 13 heats to decide the winner, with winners for fastest, best-built, and most creatively-designed boats.

Strickler says one of his students asked why she had to build a boat.  She wasn't expecting to be stranded on an island afterall.

He says every employer wants people who can think creatively, problem-solve, and work as part of a team.

And if the greatest, allegedly unsinkable ocean liner can go under, so can a cardboard boat.

They, like any boat, can also capsize.

In this case, the only casualties are bruised egos.

The winners for the events were:

Fastest boat:

1st - Lucas  - Levi Harris, Jordan Edwards, Eric Brubaugh

2nd - Crestline - Zach Taylor, Mike Spade, Jordan Smith

3rd - Jordan Smith

Most Creative Design

1st - Crestline - Amanda Dixson, Devin Bailey, Soren Murphy

2nd - Crestline - Nick Jeffreys, Jacob Pearson

3rd - Crestline - Michael Forwith, Emily Edgington
