Richland Newhope has presented its 7th Annual Hero with Heart award to a young girl who has made a significant difference in the life of someone with a developmental disability.

Five people were nominated for the honor. The agency’s Developmental Disabilities Awareness Committee selected Bree Fellows of Shelby as this year’s winner.

For the past three years, Fellows has organized garage sales to raise money to purchase needed equipment for Flat Rock Homes & Care Center near Bellevue, OH. Operated by the United Methodist Church, Flat Rock serves children and adults with developmental disabilities.

Fellows was introduced to the facility at the age of 5 while attending bible school.

“I really like helping people and it just makes the world a better place if you help people,” said the now 9-year- old.

In addition to garage sales, Fellows has also placed donation jars at local businesses. Over the past three years, her efforts have raised about $3,100. Fellows has used that money to purchase wheelchairs, iPads, and sensory equipment.

Fellows is also recognized for routinely assisting a classmate at Plymouth-Shiloh Elementary who has a disability.

“She is paralyzed with her left arm…and also some difficulty walking,” said Fellows. “I help her carry things and do stuff that she needs help with.”

Other 2014 Hero with Heart award nominees were: Sue Noblet, Mansfield, who supports individuals with developmental disabilities through the Area Agency on Aging’s Passport program; Deb Moritz, Mansfield, who organizes an annual Christmas luncheon and gifts for up to 100 individuals with developmental disabilities; Aurelio Diaz, Mansfield, a Richland Newhope employee who started a dance troupe at Richland Newhope Industries, Inc.; and Mansfield Mayor Tim Theaker for his support of the development of the City Garden Café at the Mansfield Municipal Building.

The Hero with Heart winner was honored during Richland Newhope’s 25th Annual Recognition Banquet on May 9. Thirty-nine Newhope employees were also recognized for employment milestones of five to 30 years.

For the first time, two staff members were named Employee of the Year for 2013. They are Sheri Bailey, supervisor of Transportation, and Mike Bays, maintenance repair worker II.

Also during the banquet, Richland Newhope honored the 2013 Employees of the Month, three volunteers, members of the Richland County Board of Developmental Disabilities, the Richland Newhope Industries, Inc. Board, and the Pediatric Development Center, Inc. Board, and five community members who serve on DD Board committees.
