When is comes to association football or "soccer" as we call it here in the U.S., it has never really achieved the amount of praise and success as it has with other countries.

With the World Cup going on, it is almost like fuel to a small flame that began in 1994 when the United States hosted the World Cup. The event drew an average attendance of 68,991, a World Cup record as well as setting record television audiences in the United States.

Following the 1994 World Cup, U.S. Soccer pledged to create a professional outdoor league which launched Major League Soccer (MLS) in 1996, which helped develop American players.

In the 2002 FIFA World Cup, the United States reached the quarterfinals, its best result the team had ever achieved.

The following World Cup in 2006 made history when it surpassed Major League Baseball's World Series in viewers.

In 2006, the World Cup had 17 million U.S. viewers while the World Series had 15.8, beating the World Series by over a million.

Every World Cup since has seen an increase in American viewers, this years match between United States and Portugal brought a record high of 25.2 million US viewers.

A number of Americans also tuned in to watch Team USA battle international powerhouse Belgium on Tuesday afternoon, including a large crowd of locals at Buffalo Wild Wings in Ontario. Among those in attendance was WMFD's Brian Skowronski who asked patrons about their interest in the sport of soccer.
