The holiday weekend is here, which means plenty of fun, food and fireworks. But all that celebrating can quickly turn to tragedy when people choose to drive after drinking.

Drunk driving fatalities are high year-round, but they typically spike during holidays like the 4th of July. Local law enforcement and the State Highway Patrol will be out in full force this weekend.

Their focus this year, looking for impaired and aggressive drivers. Last year, State Highway Patrol made close to 300 OVI arrests in a 24 hour from July 4th to the 5th.

Since the 4th falls on a Friday this year, most people will celebrate throughout the weekend which means a busy time for law enforcement.

Sergeant Redden says the public can do their part, if you see something, say something, by calling #677. It'll connect you to the nearest patrol post and you can report impaired drivers.

Their ultimate goal is to keep us safe by reducing crashes, which reduce fatalities. A few simple precautions before you head out, can keep you safe and enjoying the 4th of July for many years to come.
