This fall, approximately 310 students will attend Ontario City Schools who currently reside outside the district. That figure is up 60 students from last school year alone and could be even bigger with open enrollment applicants currently on a waiting list due to several grade levels already being at their max capacity.

Grades 6, 9, 11, and most of elementary grades are already at capacity, according to Superintendent Lisa Carmichael, who says the district had to purchase additional lockers for both the high school and middle school to accommodate the increase of students.

The addition is a slight monetary hit to the district, but school treasurer Randy Harvey says the rush of new students to Ontario actually played a huge factor in the district not spending more than the budget for just the second time in 25 years. Ontario City Schools finished last school year $160,000 under budget, according to Harvey.

The district will be spending around $300,000 of permanent improvement money over the summer to enhance to the growing district. Improvements include new outdoor playground equipment and resurfacing of the middle school parking lot.
