A favorite summer pastime stirring up confusion and frustration in a local community. Among items on the agenda at Galion's City Council meeting Tuesday night, one interesting topic stood out.

A change in the city's ordinance regarding pool passes. Many people wouldn't think twice about it, but Melody Mohn and her partner Hela Young certainly did.

The couple was told they could not buy a family pass to Heise Park Pool for their family of six because the city ordinance states, "a family pass must be issued to a mother and father."

Council members suggested changing the word "family" to a "group" or "household pass", to better accommodate all types of families. Although many were in favor of this change, Galion resident Bob Cerar has an issue with council changing the ordinance.

He says, quote " by changing this ordinance you're forcing us to agree with a definition of family that didn't exist in the past."

But council sees it differently. Bucyrus, Crestline, New Washington, Marion, Willard and Shelby are just a few local pools whose term "family" isn't as narrowly defined as Galion's.

Council approved a motion to send the ordinance back to committee, in order to work on the wording and specifics.
