CACY, Community Action for Capable Youth, is taking a stand against tobacco. CACY joined thousands of young people nationwide Wednesday for the 18th Annual Kick Butts Day. The organization hosted its second annual "Kick Butts With Art Show," in observance of the national event. CACY executive director Tracee Anderson said artwork of students in grades 3-12 in Richland County, were on display at the Richland County Longview Center."The artwork will portray the damaging effects of tobacco on health and quality of life," Anderson said. "Last year we had over 40 works of art adn this year we have 62 works of art representing youth from across Richland County. All of the pieces represented our anti-tobacco campaign," Anderson said. Certificates were presented to the art winners. Anderson said the winners art works will be on display at their schools throughout the year.  According to the Federal Trade Commission, tobacco companies spend $8.5 billion a year, nearly $1 million each hour, to market cigarettes and smokeless tobacco products. Tobacco use is the number one cause of preventable death in the U.S., killing more than 400,000 people and costing $96 billion in health care bills each year. In Ohio, tobacco use claims 18,500 lives and costs $4.37 billion in health care bills each year. Currently, 21.1 percent of the state's high school students smoke.
