Bucyrus Elementary students helped save lives Monday, as they packed a full 5-hour schedule with volunteer blood donors during the 4th annual Pint Size Hero Program.

The blood drive was held from 4-9 p.m. in the Bucyrus Elementary cafeteria and provided students with an opportunity not only to help the American Red Cross, but to be recognized for their efforts.

"They get a little prize" says event coordination Diane Kaple of students who signed up donors. "It's like a community project. Even though [the students] can't give blood, they're helping save lives by bringing in someone to do it."

Bucyrus third grader Haylee Quaintance was able to convince both of her parents to donate blood for the event and was thrilled about their efforts for a constructive cause.

"I'm glad we're actually helping people who really need it." Quaintance remarked. "It's an exciting event."

Others, like Bucyrus resident Jennifer Robson, simply showed up on their own accord to support the cause. Robson says she has "a rare blood type" and "understands the value in it".

Robson asserts that she almost feels obligated to donate when she can, stating, "If I can help, I want to help."

Kaple says students host an event at the elementary school twice per academic year and will also put one on in the summer.
