Akers Veterinary Clinic in Mansfield put on their 12th Annual Rabies Clinic for the public. Veterinarian Jody Akers helped administer free one-year rabies vaccinations along with fellow veterinarians Laurie Hickox, and Henry Akers (Jody's father).

"It helps keep the community members as well as their pets safe," Akers said. "We're vaccinating because rabies is zoonotic, which means that people can contract it as well as animals. Usually, this comes from bats, but last year in Ohio, there were several positive cases of rabies in cats and raccoons."

In previous years, the clinic's annual rabies administrations treated from 600-800 animals. Lines for treatment were even longer this year, and event coordinators predicted that 2014's rabies clinic would turn out similar numbers.

"We love the community service aspect," Akers said. "It's a pretty active, busy day, and it's fun to watch even if you don't have a pet."
