You can never be too careful these days with crime and violence present in just about every community, so neighborhoods are teaming up to become more aware of their uncertain surroundings.

Several Mansfield area community members attended a neighborhood safety and awareness program at Linden Road Presbyterian Church on Thursday evening with an interest of becoming more educated on different issues. Officer Stacie Garrick with the Mansfield P.D. and Scott Zartman of Neighborhood Watch discussed being aware of neighborhood crime and offered advice on how to prevent it.

Garrick says her best advice is simply "don't become an east target". Doing simple things like hiding valuables in your vehicle and locking doors, Garrick says, are easy tips to prevent crime.

Zartman believes "getting the neighborhood to work together" is a key component to successful neighborhood watch groups.
