The economic impact of the second Tough Mudder event in Mansfield will be known in about a month. In the meantime, Richland County basks in the glow of another successful attraction that went off without a hitch, despite on-site parking being cancelled due to muddy conditions and moved to the former General Motors plant. Convention and Visitors Bureau President Lee Tasseff says Tough Mudder shuttled people from the G.M. site last year, so the sudden change in plans went smoothly. He says the event attracted about 10,000 participants and could have generated up to $4-million for the local economy. But Tasseff says Tough Mudder's impact to this area goes beyond money, with the statewide and interstate attention it gives Mansfield. Tasseff says as far as he knows, Tough Mudder organizers have every intention of returning for three more years, under the contract they signed with the city. In fact, they good-naturedly gave Mansfield a new name, Mudsfield.
