The new security checkpoint at the front entrance of the Richland County Courthouse started operating Thursday. Retired sheriff's deputies are checking visitors for weapons as their possessions are X- Rayed and they pass through a metal detector. It's going smoothly as Richland becomes the last county in Ohio to have such security at its administration building. The checkpoint is intended to prevent any emotionally- charged situations from escalating into violence with the use of weapons. The start-up cost for construction, equipment, and staffing was $140,000. The operating cost will be $65,000 a year, with each county office contributing to the expense.
