Thirty-seven cases of measles and counting have forced the Ashland County-City Health Department to declare a public health state of emergency. This means the health department is asking the state for financial assistance as it holds measles clinics and vaccinates growing numbers of people, and pays a staff to help prevent the outbreak from spreading. The measles outbreak, which was brought to Ohio by Amish missionaries visiting the Philippines, can cause many serious illnesses and even death. The Ashland County-City Health Department holds regular measles vaccination clinics at its offices on State Route 60 next to the Career Center, and at Amish school houses and the Loudonville Lion's Club. A joint clinic with Wayne County is this Thursday from two to five p.m. at Saint Steven's Hall in West Salem.
