If you live in the city of Mansfield, odds are you're paying more for trash pick-up than citizens in any other community of it's size in the state. But the city's North End Community Improvement Collaborative is looking to change all that.

Discussions on Mansfield's current trash collection system, or lack there of, dominated the conversation at Wednesdays Citizen Action meeting, with group member Tracy Graziani sharing data she has gathered on the issue.

Graziani says she has thoroughly researched trash collection in the area and found that Mansfield is one of very few cities of its size throughout the state that does not offer municipal garbage pick-up. This creates a slew of problems for the city, according to Graziani, with trash dumping and littering becoming more noticeable throughout the community.

"People who either can't afford [trash collection] or don't have access to appropriate means are doing things that are illegal and obviously adding to the blight by dumping their trash," Graziani says.

She also says trash collection would be more affordable for consumers if the city were to offer municipal pick-up.

"There's redundancies when you have multiple haulers," Graziani says, "so that drives up the cost."

Graziani also believes offering municipal trash collection would take "a lot of the burden off of the city", because it would be easier to collect non-payments, apparent who is disposing improperly and more cost efficient for tax-payers.

The Citizen Action group plans to discuss the issue with Mansfield City Council in the near future.
