As the fun holiday weekend inches closer, it's important to keep safety in mind. Lauren Artino has a few tips on something we may not think about this 4th of July...eye safety.

Fireworks are part of the fun and festivities on the 4th, but Ophthalmologist Dr. Jen Bogucki says we should leave it to the professionals. More than 9,000 firework related injuries happen in the US every year.

With roughly 1 in 8 of those harming the eyes. Injuries vary from burns on and around the eyes as well as more severe injuries which could cause cataracts, retinal detachments or even blindness. There are more nerve endings on the front of the eye than anywhere else on the body, which makes even the slightest injury extremely painful.

If you still plan to set off fireworks, its suggested to follow the lead of pyrotechnic professionals who launch big displays and wear protective eye-wear.
