Over One Hundred People Baptized in Local River

Bellville's CitiChurch conducted over one hundred traditional baptisms this Sunday. Instead of holding them indoors, the church chose a slightly more traditional approach: holding them outdoors, in a nearby river.

"Throughout the year, we offer baptisms inside," said Micah Pelkey, Lead Pastor at CitiChurch. "Last summer, we decided to give (the congregation) the option of coming outside, almost a little bit of tradition and heritage. Something unique, sort of special."

Pelkey said his favorite moments are the ones where people feel a very special emotional and spiritual connection.

"You know, even last year when I did the baptisms and again today, there's just a lot of tears," Pelkey admitted. "When I see them hugging their parents, and parents hugging their child, it just overwhelms my heart. You know, usually I've got a lot of tears just watching to what God's doing in their lives."

Several people who weren't previously going to participate joined the long line of people who were eagerly waiting to be baptized. Participants who couldn't bring themselves to the river had the river brought to them - with several pastors carrying buckets of river water up to the shore. Familes and friends of those who chose to participate in the baptism showed up to support their loved ones and cheered as the ceremony went on.
