Safety Town is underway for its 75th summer in Mansfield. The free program, founded in Mansfield in 1937, is offered in three ten-day sessions in June and July at the Spanish Immersion School, formerly Brinkerhoff Elementary. Police officer Jack Shay gives the five-year-olds instruction on safe bike-riding and avoiding auto traffic. And such organizations as Community Action for Capable Youth (CACY) teach the children to avoid drugs, by not putting things into their mouths if they don't know what they are. The second Safety Town session from July 2nd through 13th is filled, but there are openings in the third session from July 16th through the 27th. A 75th anniversary celebration is set for 10 a.m. on Friday, July 13th at the school. |
