Early voting got off to a roaring start on its first day Tuesday. Voters waited in line, but it moved smoothly, at the Richland County Board of Elections office at the Longview Center. Deputy Elections Director Bill Freytag says 131 voters cast ballots in the first three hours. Ohio election officials expect half of all voters to take advantage of the 35 day early voting period. The last day to register to vote is next Tuesday, October ninth. The board of elections will be open until nine o'clock that night. Meanwhile, Catherine Turcer and Matt Cain of Voters First Ohio brought their tour of Ohio to Richland County in support of State Issue Two which seeks to change the way congressional and state legislative districts are drawn. Turcer says the long-standing method of having the state legislature re-draw the districts after each census amounts to manipulating the election process and maintaining political power in certain areas. Issue Two would require the Ohio Appeals Court to take applications, and the House Speaker and Minority Leader to create a commission of four Republicans, four Democrats, and four independents to draw district boundaries with an eye toward political fairness and competition. |
