Saying that Lexington has overachieved through six games this season may be under selling their talent, but they have certainly surprised many with their 4-2 start. The Minutemen were picked to finish dead last in the super competitive OCC by local members of the media and while there is still a long way to go in the 2012 season, the Minutemen have proven they're no bottom feeder. Friday night Lexington battled with 5-1 Madison to the final whistle, but would fall at home 14-10 after holding a 10-0 half time advantage. "They just did a great job making adjustments at half time defensively and played a really good second half." Says Lexington first year head coach Dan Studer. "We played a great game defensively. We wanted to control their rushing game because we knew it was a pretty big threat and we did that probably the best we have all year." Madison's Kale Huss entered Friday's game as the area's leading rusher, coming off a school record setting performance against Wooster with 314 yards and 4 touchdowns. But a stiffling Minutemen defense would hold Huss to just 3 yards on 2 carries in the first half and limit Madison to just 48 yards of total offense. For the game, Lexington allowed just 98 yards on the ground to the Rams, but a late 1-yard touchdown run by Huss with just 32 seconds to play would end the Minutemen's night. Despite the loss senior captain Michael Boals says he was pleased with the team's defensive performance and really has been all season. "Everybody's been executing really well." Boals says "The secondary, the D-line, linebackers, we're all playing as a group." That group will be preparing for a much different attack than the one Madison presented on Friday when Lexington travels to Wooster this week. The 2-4 Generals have displayed a potent passing attack this year with quarterback Cam Daugherty and enter Friday's game with the Minutemen fresh off a 54-24 beat down of Clear Fork. "It's just a different game plan this week for the Generals just because they're a completely different offense than Madison." Studer says. But Lexington won't plan for any changes offensively this week. "We're going to do what we do." Says Studer. "We like to focus on fundamentals here and we like to focus on executing the things we do the best." In order to execute on Friday however, Boals says the team needs to put together a solid week of practice to implement the weeks game plan. "At the beginning of the week we always emphasize how big practice is." Boals says. "It really depends on our scout team, how good of a look they give us and they really do a good job week in and week out." The Lexington scout team will have to try and mimic Daugherty this week, who threw for 135 yards and 3 scores against the Colts. Wooster also racked up 348 yards on the ground in that contest, so the Minutemen defense better be ready to play when the lights come on Friday night, because it won't get any easier for them down the stretch. Lex finishes the year with what Studer referred to as "the gantlet" with games coming up against 6-0 West Holmes, 5-1 Mansfield Senior and 3-3 rival Ashland. Certainly a rugged finish for a team picked to finish last in the conference. @BrianSkowronski |
