Several students at Madison Comprehensive High School are saying NO to school lunches. Sophomore student Remington Shoenman is encouraging his fellow classmates to boycott the school lunches starting Tuesday, in an effort to get "better tasting" healthy foods. The new school year began with new healthier lunches thanks to The Child Nutrition Reauthorization Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 which went into effect this school year. School lunches now offer more nutritious choices for students, including whole grains, more fruits and vegetables and flavored milk that is lower in sugar and calories. Remington says he's all for healthier lunches, he just wants them to taste good at the same time. Remington's mother Vickie Schoenman says she's keeping an eye on what her son and the kids are doing and saying, so that they remember it's federal guidelines and not the schools fault. However, she agrees the food should still taste good for the students. Last week, the district introduced the Ohio Department of Education's official school lunch menu titled "Menus that Move." Coleman asks the students boycotting to give the new lunches a chance, since it's only been in effect for one week. Madison the only district in Richland County offering the federally assisted meal program. Still, students at Madison Comprehensive High School are standing by their boycott and asking others to do the same at their school. It looks as though the fight against new school lunches, is just beginning. |
