The annual Walk to End Alzheimer's disease takes place this Saturday at the Richland Carrousel in downtown Mansfield. Registration starts at 9:30 am with the one-and-a-half mile walk beginning at 10:30. More than 250 walkers are expected to go from the Carrousel to Park Avenue West to Family Video at Bowman Street, and back. Walkers collect donations from family, friends, and neighbors, with this year's goal being $36,000. Tim Storms of Mansfield, a member of the committee organizing the walk and a former member of the board for the 24-county Northwest Ohio chapter of the Alzheimer's Association, says money raised from the work goes to respite care, education, and research to find a cure for the disease which first robs people of their short-term memory, then their ability to perform normal daily activities, and eventually their lives. Money is also raised through corporate sponsorships, and by a raffle of gift baskets. $26,000 was raised last year. Another Walk To End Alzheimer's will be held in Ashland on Saturday October 20th. |
