The Ohio State Highway Patrol brought its Ballistic Engineered Armored Response Vehicle to WMFD-TV Monday. The heavily-equipped truck was purchased with money seized from drug dealers. It is one of fifteen vehicles used by the highway patrol's twenty-six member Special Response Team. Trooper Brandon Cruz says it is used an average of three-hundred times a year, for any of a number of purposes such as high-risk warrant services, hostage and stand-off situations, riots, and dignitary protection. Trooper Erik Lofland says the vehicle is based in Columbus and is taken throughout the state, often to help local police handle emergency situations. The patrol also brought the equipment truck that travels with the armored response vehicle, which has been sent to such high-profile situations as the Lucasville and Mansfield prison riots, and the riots in Toledo and Cincinnati. |
