Richland Newhope Industries said "thank you" Thursday morning to the businesses that give an opportunity to people who want to prove they can support themselves despite having disabilities.

The RNI Bucket Band performed to start the annual Employer Recognition Breakfast, attended by 300 people at the Mansfield Holiday Inn.

Adult Services Director Amanda South says 125 area businesses employed 289 Newhope individuals this year, earning $489,000 in wages.  She says they're trained for work that interests them, then given placement assistance, and show they're willing and able to arrive on time and ready to put in a day's work.

The guest speaker was former Ohio State quarterback Craig Krenzel, who led the Buckeyes to the national championship after an undefeated season in 2002.

Krenzel says he's a firm believer everyone has their own gifts and talents, and can make a contribution if they're given the opportunity.

The Industry-Based Employer of the Year is Mr. Box, with Oak Grove Manor the Community Employer of the Year.

Richland Newhope Industries' employees of the year are Lynn Hess, Carrie Lardinais, and Robert Forbes.

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month with the theme "A Strong Workforce in an Inclusive Workforce: What Can YOU Do"?
