Two Clear Fork High School students are facing charges for bringing a weapon on school  property.

Benjamin S. Weirich, 18,  and a 17-year-old male student were arrested Tuesday after the school was placed on lockdown briefly around 10:41 a.m. after the school administration received reports of a male student with a gun.

Richland County Sheriff's Office Major Dale Fortney said when Richland County Sheriff's deputies, members of the Ohio State Highway Patrol and Bellville Police Department , arrived on the scene, school officials had located and secured a .38  caliber Taurus revolver, which was not loaded.

Major Fortney said Weirich brought the gun from home without ammunition to give to the 17-year-old. Upon further investigation it was discovered that the gun had been stolen in a burglary on Feb. 29 and the serial numbers had been partially defaced.

Authorities also found ammunition and another firearm at Weirich's home, a 9mm High Point semi-automatic pistol with defaced serial numbers that was also stolen from the same burglary.

Weirich was taken to the Richland County Jail and charged with tampering with evidence, a third-degree felony. Weirich may face additional weapons-related charges.

The 17-year-old was taken to the Richland County Juvenile Detention Center for delinquency by reason of possession of a firearm in a school safety zone. He also faces additional weapons-related charges.

"We applaud the decisive action by the Clear Fork High School administration and the quick response by our deputies and partner agencies to protect our most valuable resource, our children," Major Fortney said.
