Twelve businesses were cited for selling alcohol or tobacco to underage customers during a METRICH and CACY compliance check this week.

Four businesses sold twice during the three-hour operation, including Bell gas station at 1340 North Lexington-Springmill Road and Valero gas station at 3880 West Fourth Street, both in Ontario; along with BP/7-11 at 26 W. Main St. in Lexington and Duke and Duchess at 10 Broadway St. in Shelby.

Fifty-two other businesses checked ID's and did not sell, but METRICH Director Lieutenant Ken Coontz says twelve is still too many. 

Each cashier was given a summons to appear in court on misdemeanor charges, and each business will be called before the Ohio Liquor Control Board.
