The third and last of three information meetings for the Galion School District's 8-mill, 5-year levy to be voted on during the November 6 General Election was held Thursday night at Wesley Chapel Church. Galion City Schools supt Dr. Kathy Jenney said 6-mills of the levy would go toward operating expenses and 2-mills will be used for permanent improvements. Jenney said the levy would replace the revenue lost from the 2004 tax levy repeal that costs the district $785,000 annually. "It's tough to ask taxpayers for additional money because we know times are tough so we would not be asking if it wasn't a critical need. We are in a situation where we'll be in deficit spending. We've made incredible cuts and significant gains in academic achievement, "Jenney said. "Any further cuts will hurt the programs for kids so we really think its important that people support the levy," Jenney said. The levy is a property tax so a person with a $100,000 home would pay $21 a month and person with a $50,000 will pay $10.50 a month. This is the first new levy to be placed on the ballot for Galion voters in 12 years. Should the levy fail, the Galion School District would have to submit a plan to the state on the future of the district. Jenney said the levy will be placed on the May ballot if it fails. |
