Turn your clocks back one hour before you go to bed Saturday night, as daylight savings time gives way to standard time. That means it will be dark as midnight by early evening, creating hazards for drivers and pedestrians. Reed Richmond, Health Educator for the Mansfield-Ontario-Richland County Health Department and a member of the Safe Communities Coalition, says drivers will need time to adjust to the earlier darkness and are more likely to feel drowsy. He recommends pedestrians take every necessary step to be more visible to drivers, including walking toward on-coming traffic, wearing reflective clothing, and being extra careful crossing the street. Richmond says statistics show, pedestrians are three times more likely to be hit by a car during the first week after the time change. |
