Westlake quarterback Kent Axcell raced 94 yards for a Demon touchdown early in the ballgame Friday against Madison for a quick 7-0 lead in the teams Division II regional quarter final. But that would be all the scoring Westlake would do on their home field as Madison knocked off the Demons 14-7 in overtime to win the school's second playoff game in school history. Trailing 7-0 in fourth quarter, Madison's Kalvin Gordon put the Rams on the board with a 15 yard run. Dalton Fix added the point after to make it 7-7 and that is the way it would stay at the end of regulation. In overtime, Madison would strike first with quarterback Alex Smith finding Cody Rush with a 20 yard catch and run for six. Dalton Fix added the extra point to make it 14-7, Madison. Westlake was able to pick up a big first down on their overtime possession on a fourth and nine situation. Then on the next series of downs, needing a touchdown to push the game to a second OT, on fourth down Demon QB Kent Axcell was unable to find an open receiver and scrambled straight up the field from the 11 yard line, but was stopped a half yard short of the goal line giving the Rams their first playoff win since 2005, 14-7. Madison outgained the Demons in total yards 197 to 155. Passing yards were almost non-existent with the Rams getting 20 yards through the air, Westlake 35, as each team found it difficult to throw on a field that looked more like a pig pen than a gridiron. With the loss, Westlake ends their season at 9-2, while Madison now at 10-1 will move on to the Division II regional semifinal next Friday at a site to be determined by the OHSAA. The Rams will face a familar playoff foe as they will go up against 10-1 Toledo Central Catholic who blasted Midview 50-7, in their regional quarter final. Back in 2005, it was TCC who ended Madison's season rolling over the Rams at Tiffin by a 42-14 count in that year's D-2 regional semifinal. |
