The Richland County Commissioners have given a one-year permit to S&S Aggregates of Lucas to apply brine to icy roads.

The commissioners say the use of brine, mixed with grit that costs $3.50 a ton, is a small fraction of the cost of road salt at $49 a ton.

Brine and grit are also more effective for improving traction when the temperature is below twenty degrees.
