The Maxwell White murder case is being brought back to Ashland County, which will be a costly price. White shot and killed Ashland State Highway Patrol Trooper James R. Gross during a traffic stop on January 19, 1996. Six months later, an Ashland County Common Pleas Court jury found White guilty of aggravated murder and other charges and in July 1996, he was sentenced to death. The U.S. 6th Circuit Court vacated the death sentence in 2005 and ordered White to be resentenced. "This was on an appeal because of a supposed comment that was made by a juror, a biased juror," Ashland County Commissioner Kim Edwards said. "Over the years this case has had the potential of coming back to the county and now it appears it will come back to Ashland County in 2013." Judge Ronald P. Forsthoefel attended the commissioners meeting, Thursday, to update them on the situation and the cost that will be associated with it. Forsthoefel requested a minimum of an additional $180,000 to add to his budget at Ashland County Common Pleas Court. Not only will the return of this case impact Judge Forsthoefel's budget, it will also impact the county prosecutor's budget who will have to retry the case, as well as the sheriff's budget, who will supply security and transportation. Edwards says they could see an increase in the Clerk of Courts budget as well, calling it a "huge impact on Ashland County." Edwards says they will look at whatever they have to do, to shift dollars to be prepared and ready for this case. |
