The city of Shelby is allowing its long-standing contract with Shelby Home and Public Health to expire after this year.

Registered Nurse Laura Burrer, director of the non-profit nursing agency says she does not know why its relationship supporting the Shelby Health Department since 1974 was suddenly severed.

Shelby Home and Public Health took a $70,000 reduction in funding from the city two years ago, and discontinuing this contract will cut another $120,000 from its budget.

But Burrer hopes to make up that revenue loss with more individual clients, and without having to resort to layoffs from the nine-member staff.

Burrer says she is concerned about whether the Shelby Health Department will pick up all of the services that have been provided by Shelby Home and Public Health.

The agency has existed since 1919.
