A great cookie caper was on trial Wednesday as 39 third-graders from Mansfield St. Peter's Elementary School visited the courtroom of Domestic Relations Judge Heather Cockley. Students served as prosecuting and defense attorneys, and jurors, as the meanest and most unpopular kid in the class defended himself in a mock trial. Judge Cockley and St. Peter's Social Studies teacher Cathy Ault say they have the students visit the court to teach them about considering both sides of a story, and how the justice system works. The defendant is Timmy Tyrant. He's accused of stealing Gary Good's cookie, then knocking down Penny Pushover and running away. Gary's sister Glenda saw Timmy standing next to the cookie wrapper on the playground with a smirk on his face. But no one saw Timmy take or eat the cookie. The jury was hung, voting 6-5 in favor of not guilty. |
