After eight games on the season the Shelby Whippet boys basketball team stands at 6-2 overall and 2-1 in the Northern Ohio League. This Friday, Shelby gets back on the game floor traveling to Bellevue to face the 2-3, 0-2 Redmen in NOL play after a holiday break of 13 days. The Whippets last game was back on December 22 at Upper Sandusky, a 51-34 win. Bellevue started their basketball season late after a run in football all the way to the Division III state final against Akron St.Vincent-St.Mary. Coach Troy Schwemley feels it may take some time before the Redmen get their basketball legs, but they do have one of the best athletes in the NOL in quarterback, now point guard Jalen Santoro. Concerning the Whippets, the coach says he and his staff have done their best to keep the team in game shape over the extended break bringing back alumni for intersquad scrimmages. But Schwemley also adds he feels the break was beneficial especially after four straight double weekends to start the season. The Redmen and Whippets split last year, both teams won at home Shelby 73-48 in January, Bellevue 58-53 in February. After Friday's contest, the Whippets are home to face Lexington on Saturday evening. |
