The Rock Road bridge in Ontario is almost gone. The Civil War era sandstone structure was damaged by a truck in July of 2011, forcing the section of Rock Road off of State Route 309 to be closed due to concerns over stones falling from the bridge. A contractor started removing the bridge the week before Christmas, but work was slowed due to the holidays and a heavy snowfall. The project resumed over the last two weeks and is nearly completed. Rock Road will remain closed until spring when the asphalt companies re-open and a contractor can be hired to widen the road to two lanes. The sandstone blocks were given to the city of Ontario for an undetermined future use. |
