I-71 South Shut Down For Multi-Vehicle Crash

An Alliance man was seriously injured Saturday afternoon in a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 71 southbound near the 159 mile post near Bellville .

Trooper Ryan Randall of the Mansfield Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said the crash occurred about 2:45 p.m. when a 2007 Chevy Cavalier and a 2006 Honda Civic were traveling northbound on Interstate 71.  

Randall said the preliminary investigation shows the Honda Civic and the Chevy Cavalier made contact in the left lane in I-71 northbound.  

 The Cavalier, driven by Paul M. Brown, 27, of Hilliard, was traveling northbound on I-71 and struck the Honda, driven by, Mark J. Aldana, 39, of Alliance.

Aldana's vehicle lost control, went into the median striking the cable rail and continued under the cable rail traveling into the southbound lanes of I-71.  Aldana's vehicle was struck by a southbound 2007 Volvo commercial truck driven by Qian Zhao, 56, of Philadelphia. 

The Honda and the commercial truck traveled off the right side of the road and came to rest in a ravine.  

Trooper Randall said Aldana was entrapped in the Honda for approximately 30 minutes. Aldana was extricated by Troy Township EMS and was transported to MedCentral Mansfield Hospital with serious injuries. 

Zhao and his passenger, Jain Wen Liao, 44, of Rosemead, California, were not injured.

Trooper Randall said another accident also occurred when two other southbound vehicles attempted to avoid the first collision. 

 Shatrina Banks, 38, of Cincinnati, was traveling southbound in a 2012 Mazda 6 and was slowing down due to the accident. Banks was struck by a 2004 Nissan Armada driven by Xiomara G. Perdomo, 26, of Grove City, who was not able to stop at the time.

 Banks, Perdomo and passengers in Perdomo's vehicle, Monica Mathis, 54, of Cincinnati, and Austin Railey, 18, of Cincinnati, all claimed minor injuries but refused treatment.

 All three lanes of I-71 south were closed for nearly four hours.  ODOT setup detours for southbound traffic on I-71.

 

 

The crash remains under investigation and not citations have been issued at this time.  Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash.
