A Galion High School social studies and Career Based Intervention teacher has been arrested for allegedly having an inappropriate sexual relationship with an underage student.

Ryan Tanner, 36, was arrested Monday on a sexual battery warrant and is being held without bail in the Crawford County Jail.

Galion Schools Superintendent Kathy Jenney says they are extremely disappointed in Tanner's actions, especially since he was considered an upstanding administrator.

"Ryan has been an outstanding teacher," Jenney said. "He's been on numerous committees."

"He's affected a lot of students in a very positive way, so, we were absolutely, just, very upset and disappointed this happened," Jenney said. "He's done so much good for so many people."

An anonymous call from a former Galion graduated, started the investigation into the alleged inappropriate relationship.  Jenney said in this difficult time, she's very proud of the relationship and trust the administration has built with their students.

Board of Education President Dennis Long says the students are their first priority.

"The lines are getting blurred between what's right and wrong, adults and children," Long said. "I see too much of that where children are being included in adult issues and they shouldn't be. They should be considered children, as they are."

"Let them enjoy their childhood," Long said. "There's enough stuff going on in adult life, let's let them live and relish in childhood as long as possible."

Tanner, a married, father, is being charged with engaging in a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old female student at the end of 2011 through 2012. The student graduated in the spring.

Tanner was placed on administrative leave on January 23, pending a criminal investigation by authorities.
