The Shelby City Schools Board of Education is hoping a new 7.1 mill levy on the May ballot will help generate much needed funding for the district.

The five-year levy is in response to Gov. John Kasich's budget cuts and his new funding formula expected Thursday.

According to Shelby Schools Supt .Tim Tarvin, the district has already made several cuts, including 34 teachers, nine aids, three secretaries and two administrators.

Tarvin hopes the new levy will be passed May 7, saying they are in dire need of the funds and anticipating more cuts to take place even if the levy passes.

The levy would cost the owner of a $100,000 home, under the age of 65, $217 a year. Those over 65, would pay $163.

Voters in the Shelby School District largely voted down a 7.5 mill levy on November's ballot.

During the meeting, the Shelby Board of Education voted 5 to 0, to terminate bus driver, Becky Tridico.

The decision came after Tridico made an illegal U-turn on a four-way highway, while students with disabilities were aboard the bus.

According to the resolution terminating her employment, Tridico was disciplined in August of 2012 as well, for misconduct in connection with the operation of her school bus.
