The United Way of Richland County's campaign is over, and it surpassed its $1.6-million goal by $56,589.

Director Bob Maxey attributes the success to the economy showing signs of improvement, the Pacesetter campaign starting early and raising $100,000 more than it did the previous year, and to having new donors and those who increased their contributions.

But while the economy has improved, the need for services continues growing, and Maxey says topping the goal will help the United Way's member agencies serve the many people needing assistance.

The United Way of Richland County also topped its goal a year ago, by $22,000, less than half the amount above goal this time around.

The annual dinner and awards ceremony is Thursday February 28th at the Mid-Ohio Conference Center.
