After downing both Ashland and Lexington on Friday and Saturday evening in conference play, the Mansfield Tygers at 14-3, 11-0 have locked up at least a share of the Ohio Cardinal Conference basketball championship. A win on Friday night against West Holmes at Pete Henry would give Senior High the outright championship with two conference games remaining against Orrville and Wooster. The Tygers won the first time around 81-49, but West Holmes at the time was without guard Brady Arnold who was out with an ankle injury. After Friday, Mansfield will be on the road at Akron St.Vincent-St.Mary in non-conference play. Then on Sunday, Mansfield will head over to Galion for the Division I tournament draw which will involve the Tygers, Madison, Marion Harding, Ashland, Sandusky and undefeated third ranked in the state, Norwalk. The Truckers enter this weekend at 17-0, 7-0 in the Northern Ohio League and owning a two game lead in the standings with Bellevue and Sandusky Perkins next on the schedule Friday and Saturday. If things play out, the Tygers and Truckers could meet up on March 7th at Galion in the Division I district semifinal. Norwalk is a projected number one seed, Mansfield number two. Both teams still have several games to play before sectionals begin the week of February 25th. Last season Norwalk stopped Mansfield at Willard in the D-1 district semifinal 78-66. |
