Lex Charm Hair Fashions at 304 E. Main St. in Lexington was the site of the Cut-a-Thon for Autism held Sunday afternoon. Nine stylists and a masseuse provided haircuts along with chair massages during the fundraiser. Lex Charm Hair Fashion stylist Mindy Thompson said the event raises awareness about the complex brain disorder that has affected her family. "I'm a mother with a child who has autism and it can be difficult. The donations are used for the families in Richland County and for us it helps with groceries. We're on a gluten free and dairy free diet which can be expensive. Autism affects 1 in 88 children and there is a need for more awareness," Thompson said. Proceeds from the event will be used to provide services for families with autistic children including socialization programs at the Friendly House, therapy at the Raemelton Equestrian Center, Project Lifesaver tracking, summer camp, transportation, music therapy and dietary information. |
