Each and every year millions of Americans make the New Year's resolution to join a gym and get in better shape. Approximately 12% of new gym members across the country will join in the month of January, but few continue to go after only a couple months. Gym owners say that attendance at their facilities diminsh "considerably" by March and roughly 50% of all new club members quit within the first six months of signing up. But that hasn't stopped the annual 30%-50% January surge from occuring at gyms around the U.S. and Mansfield area facilities have been a part of the fitness frenzy as well. At Med Central Health and Fitness Center, manager Gary Smith says the club had over 50 new members join in January and that it will certainly be the busiest month they will see all year. Smith says to keep the new members involved the facility offers incentive programs throughout the beginning of the year, such as the New Years Meltdown and allows members to bring friends free of charge. At the Mansfield YMCA, CEO Cristen Gilbert says January will also be their largest month for new member registrations because of the "New Years resolutioners". The variety of attractions at the Y is what keeps members engaged Gilbert says, because the facility has weight lifting equipment, an indoor track and one of the finest aquatic centers in the area. The newest gym in the greater Mansfield area is founded on making first time gym users feel comfortable in what the facility calls the "Judgement Free Zone". Planet Fitness opened in Ontario last April and just experienced their first January rush. Regional Manager Nick Panezich says the community "had a great response" at the gym last month and that the judgement free zone likely had a lot to do with their success. Attendance is still strong at all three facilities at the midway point in February, but the statistics show that a steady decline typically begins for gyms right around this time of year. An estimated 20%-30% of gym members in the U.S. will not work out again after the first 90 days of the year. Millions of those people will still continue to pay membership dues however, for the rest of the calendar year.
