A bartender at the Shelby American Legion post is paying the price for trying to do the right thing. She reported a drunk driver leaving the post and lost her job. Shelby Police dash cam video shows 64-year-old American Legion post officer Mike Ramey taking a field sobriety test and being arrested about two miles from the post, on his way home to Mansfield, the night of Thursday February 14th. Police report he was weaving, and had slurred speech, glassy eyes, and a strong odor of beer. A breathalyzer test revealed his blood-alcohol content was more than twice the legal limit. Post commander Mic Hubbard fired Twyla Devito two days later, and is quoted as saying what she did was morally right but bad for business because patrons shouldn't have to worry about being arrested when they leave. Shelby Police Chief Charles Roub says DeVito did the right thing and he supports her. He says Hubbard should have thought more about the potential for liability on the American Legion post if Remy had harmed or killed another driver. Mike Ramey pled no contest Monday morning to a first-degree misdemeanor OVI charge. He was fined $525, given a three-day jail sentence, and a 180-day driver's license suspension with the possibily of applying for reinstatement of his license after 15 days if his fine is paid and he presents proof of insurance. He will also serve two years of probation. |
