The Bucyrus School District presented the Mid-Year State of the Schools Address Monday in the Bucyrus Secondary School Little Theatre.

A group of parents and teachers attended the meeting to discuss the three main topics of the school address, district finances, school safety and possible district realignment.

Supt. Kevin Kimmel said the possible realignment would involve moving fifth-graders from the elementary building to the secondary building.

"One of the ways we reduced our expenditures last year was moving the preschool from the Lincoln building to the elementary building. With that move its causing a tight space at the elementary," Kimmel said.

"On the other hand the secondary building has some open classrooms due to the cut backs we made. We want to find out if the community would support the idea of moving fifth-graders to the secondary building or moving preschool back into the Lincoln building. We want community input before the school board makes any type of recommendation or move," Kimmel said.

In terms of safety, Kimmel said the district is providing a safe environment for students and staff. He said the district is working with the Crawford County Sheriff's Office on ways to help keep the schools safer.

During the presentation school treasurer Ryan Cook saids the district's financial forecast is looking a little brighter.

Cook said the district avoided a $1.9 million deficit last year by cutting 34 positions.

"The national, state and local economies continue to suffer, and we want to ensure that we are doing everything we possibly can to be good stewards of the community's dollars," Cook said.

Cook saids the district is still losing some revenue due to open enrollment  and community schools.

"Currently we have 83 kids open enrolling into the district and 217 open enrolling out of the district," Cook said.

The district is considering starting an online virtual academy to address the issue.
