All 250 Shelby schools employees were given instruction Wednesday on how to respond to a gunman in the building. The staff took a three-hour ALICE training course. ALICE is short for Alert, Lock Down, Inform, Counter, and Evacuate. Lt. Joseph Hendry of the Kent State University Police Department provided the training, which addresses when to hide, when to run, and when to fight back. Superintendent Tim Tarvin says with growing numbers of mass shootings in schools and other public buildings, this training is essential. The ALICE training stresses that doiing nothing and being a sitting duck while a shooter rampages through a building is a sure way to end-up dead. Tarvin says Shelby school employees will take more training, and work with the police, to make sure they're well prepared in the event of an attack. |
