After a dramatic win over state ranked and undefeated Norwalk, the 21-3 Mansfield Tygers will try to maintain form on Saturday evening at Bowling Green State University's Stroh Center when they face the 19-4 Anthony Wayne Generals at 8pm for the right to move on to the Division I regional semifinal next Thursday at 7pm at the University of Toledo against either 17-7 Toledo Rogers or 19-5 Toledo Central Catholic. The Tygers last won a D-1 district title in 2006, when they downed Bowling Green High School 73-68 at Anderson Arena at BGSU. Since then the districts have not been kind to the Tygers. In 2007, Senior High fell to Findlay in the D-1 final at BG 56-51. In 2008, Ashland stopped Mansfield at Willard in the district semifinal 57-54. Ashland also stopped Mansfield's four year home winning streak at new Pete Henry Gym that season. In 2009, Madison downed the Tygers for the third time in one season when the Rams bested their rivals in the semi at Willard 65-63. In 2010, the Tygers fell behind early to Lima Senior in the D-1 final at BG and came up short to the Spartans 57-49. In 2011, Findlay did it again to Senior High winning in 2OT's 60-51. Then, in 2012 the Truckers ended Mansfield's season in the semifinal at Willard 78-66. 2006 was the last of three straight D-1 district championships in basketball for Mansfield. Prior to that the Tygers won D-1 titles in 1999, 2000 and 2002. The Ashland Arrows stopped that Tyger run in 2003 with a win in the semifinal at Willard before the Orange and Brown went on to win three straight in '04, '05 and as mentioned, '06. From 1999 to 2006, the Tygers made the final four twice in D-1 in '99 and again in 2005, finishing as D-1 regional runner-up in '00 to Toledo Libbey. |
