Lady Eagles Advance to Regional Final

The Ashland University women's basketball team will play for a return trip to the elite eight in San Antonio, Texas on Monday night at Kates Gymnasium at 7pm after downing Michigan Tech in the regional semifinal Saturday night by a final of 67-54.   After a close first half that saw Ashland take a two point lead into the locker room at the break of 30-28, AU (33-1) was able to pull away in the second half outscoring the Huskies (21-9) 37-26, beating their GLIAC rival for the third time this season.

Ashland's Kari Daugherty was the games leading scorer with a double-double of 32 points and 13 rebounds.  Taylor Woods dropped in 14 points with Daiva Gerbec also getting a double-double scoring 12 points and pulling in 11 boards.  As a team Ashland shot 48% from the field 24-50, 80% from the line 16-20.  Michigan Tech was led by Jillian Ritchie and Emma Veach each with 12 points,  Sam Hoyt had ten.   From the field the Huskies were 21-55 for 38%, 3-5 from the line, 60%.

With their ninth win in a row, Ashland will matchup with another GLIAC foe in the regional final Monday night at 7pm at Kates Gymnasium in Wayne State University.  Wayne State (22-8) advanced by downing last season's regional finalist Wisconsin-Parkside 70-60.  Ashland defeated Wayne State during the regular season on December 5, 77-58.  If the Eagles win they'll advance to the Elite Eight in San Antonio, Texas on Tuesday, March 26th at 8:30pm against the winner of the Gannon (30-4)/California, PA. (22-8) matchup in the national quarterfinal.  The national semifinal is set for Wednesday, March 27th.  The D-2 national championship Friday, March 29th.
