The first student shot and killed in the 1999 massacre at Columbine High School in Littleton Colorado was Rachel Scott. Essays and journals were found in her bedroom in which she expressed her desire to show acceptance and tolerance of others. That prompted Rachel's family to start a nationwide school assembly program called Rachel's Challenge, which comes to Ontario Schools on Tuesday. School Resource Officer Adam Gongwer says the message is intended to stop the bullying that often leads to school shootings, and the program has been successful by reaching 17,000,000 people, saving at least 500 people who had wanted to commit suicide after relentless bullying, and averting ten school shooting plots. And Gongwer says the message is needed in Ontario Schools, because bullying does happen. Ontario middle and high school students will attend Rachel's Challenge assemblies Tuesday morning, with a free public meeting at 7 pm Tuesday in the middle school auditorium. |
