While last season's national championship game was close, this season was right on target, as the Ashland University women's basketball team brought home the national championship in Division II defeating Dowling 71-56, in San Antonio, Texas.  The Eagles started strong running out to an 18 point lead to start the game at 31-13 and had a halftime lead of 38-25 and were really never challenged by the Golden Lions from the midway point of the first half on.

Ashland was led in scoring by by Kari Daugherty, who pulled off another double-double with 26 points and 12 rebounds playing her last game for AU.  Taylor Woods was next with 20 points, Daiva Gerbec, another senior scored eight points, Alyssa Miller six, Lindsay Tenyak five and Ashley Dorner four.  Ashland shot 47% from the field and out rebounded the Lions 34-23.  AU's defense held Baylor transfer, Danielle Wilson of Dowling to just 15 points on the night, four in the first half.  Connie Simmons had 13, Julia Koppl 11.  With the loss Dowling ends the season as national runner-up at 30-4, while Ashland's 13th straight win gives them a school record best 37-1 finish.

The win by the Eagles marks the just the second time a women's basketball team from the GLIAC has won a national title.  Grand Valley State won it all in 2006, defeating American International 58-52.  It also marked the third straight year a GLIAC team advanced to the final with AU doing it in the past two years, while Michigan Tech finished as national runner-up in 2011 to Clayton State.  It is also the first national championship for Ashland University in a "team" sport.  For coach Sun Ramsey, the national title comes as career win number 419, 324 coming at Ashland.

Over the past two seasons, the AU women's basketball team has gone 70-3, won back-to-back GLIAC regular season and tournament championships, back-to-back NCAA Division II regional championships and played in to two straight national championship games.

SPECIAL PROGRAMMING NOTE: The replay of the National Championship game will air on WMFD TV SUNDAY at 3pm.
