April is Child Abuse Prevention Month.

And Tuesday, the Richland County Commissioners issued a proclamation for the observance to Children Services Director Patty Harrelson.

She says Pinwheels for Prevention were planted Tuesday at the Mansfield Correctional Institution, and will be Wednesday at the Mansfield Area Y, representing the 2,860 cases investigated out of the 7,500 reports of suspected abuse or neglect.

A 24-hour swim, bike, and run event starts Friday at 4 pm at the Y.

Harrelson says Ohio ranks last among the fifty states when it comes to state funding for child abuse and neglect prevention and response, making local support that much more important.
